LO3 – Summery

To research and price up options and tariffs for creating final products.

Researching similar products proved to be challenging as I could find any company offering a similar product.

We decided to approach this by talking with educational establishments to get primary feedback on the pricing scheme.

Ross (COWA) was particularly useful as he gave honest and constructive feedback.

We added the idea of bundles as this would give customers a set figure for a product. The bespoke service would still exist this was mainly to give upfront costs to potential customers on the website.

Dave Mallett – Testimonial

To Joe and Callum of Circle Studios, and to whom it may concern.

I was approached by Joe and Callum with a pitch of arranging the recording and production of Lincoln College bands for recording and production. After two

After two well-planned meetings we decided on two bands ‘The Docs’ and ‘Sunda Strait’. Arrangements with bands were made and arrangement for placement of instruments. The recording sessions took place promptly and efficiently, and the mixing and production of the tracks was delivered in a timely fashion as promised.

On day one of recording there were some technical difficulties at the studio but despite this, the day was a productive one, well done there.

Throughout the whole process Joe and Callum were professional, courteous and efficient, delivering a superb product which pleased everybody concerned.

They were both a credit to Lincoln University and I would not hesitate to hire their services for the appropriate job.

Yours Faithfully Dave Mallett

BBC Introducing Lincolnshire

One of the songs we recorded by The Docs got played on BBC Introducing Lincolnshire.

The song has now been nominated to go on the one up from this.

As this song was recorded, mixed and mastered by us, were really happy it managed to get played.

Running a Production Company

Throughout this project, we found ourselves essentially running a production company. A lot of what we learned about the dynamics of this was through trial, error and practice.

During the creation of our learning outcomes we thought it would be more efficient to separate sections between us. I would take more of a production role, and joe would take a more business role.

We found that this doesn’t really happen. We both helped each other out numerous times from helping with mixing to website creation.

From my personal experience on this project, i would say that to run a successful company, not just a production company you need to be flexible with your work. Especially for us as a small business. We were both more than happy to help with every aspect creating a great amount of fluidity between everything. I think this is definitely one of the factors that lead to our success.

Understanding a Small Business

To try and understand what small businesses go through when starting up, I decided to go around lincoln and talk to some of the staff at Guitar Parlour. The shop opened around 18 months ago making them reasonably new within the lincoln area.

I spoke to Matt and I asked him a few simple things about starting businesses and running one.

What was the hardest thing about starting up the business?

  • Getting taken seriously as a businesses. It takes time for customers to trust you, especially with high ticket items.

Since you opened what has changed about how the shop runs.

  • What the responsibilities of staff are. How we treat our customers. Little things that change the overall experience for the customer.

Even though I didn’t get to talk to Matt for very long both these answers were very interesting. I can understand and compare these to how we have found running our proto-company this project.
